Excavator or Backhoe

The Difference between an Excavator and a Backhoe?

10/12/20

What is a backhoe?

A backhoe has a tractor like base that will support a digging bucket, similar to an excavator. The main confusion for a ‘backhoe’, is the digging application is actually on the very front of the machine.

See our past blog for a full description of what an excavator is. In short, an excavator is a type of heavy construction equipment primarily used for digging holes, lifting/placing large objects, demolition of structures and landscaping.

The benefits of an Excavator to a Backhoe?

Excavators are better placed on medium to heavy-duty projects, and are far more manoeuvrable than the backhoe, as they can only rotate 200 degrees were excavators can rotate 360 degrees. The size of an excavator also means that they are easily transported and can get through those hard to reach places that a bulky piece of heavy machinery, like the backhoe, won't reach.

Overall, RM feels that an excavator has a larger benefit to most construction jobs than a backhoe.
